Block paving driveways that stay flat.

Block paving driveways in Doncaster from £75 per m². Full dig-out, 150mm compacted sub-base, concrete-haunched edges, drainage to a soakaway so it meets permitted development rules. One person, 4 to 6 days.

Every sunken, rippled block drive you've ever parked on failed for the same reason: not enough underneath it. The blocks are the cheap part. What you're paying me for is the 250mm of dig, the membrane, the 150mm of Type 1 compacted in two layers, the edges set in concrete, and the drainage. Get that right and the drive is flat in twenty years. Skip it and it's a bowl in two.

Since 2008, if you pave more than 5m² of front garden it either has to be permeable or it has to drain to somewhere on your own land, not the road. Most drives in Doncaster ignore this. I don't, because it's your problem the day you sell. I'll put in a channel drain to a soakaway or use permeable blocks on an open-graded base, whichever suits the ground and the budget.

I operate the excavator myself rather than hiring in a driver, which is why I'm usually cheaper than a landscaping firm for the same spec: no groundworker on a day rate, no waiting on someone else's diary. And the £75/m² is for a proper drive, not a top-up on someone else's base.

from £75/m²

Typically 4–6 days on site

What moves the price:

  • Size: bigger drives cost less per m². 30m² is near the top of the range; 100m² is nearer the bottom
  • Block choice: standard concrete blocks are in the £75 figure; premium or clay pavers add £15 to £40/m²
  • What's coming out: a thin tarmac skin is quick; a reinforced concrete drive isn't
  • Drainage: a channel drain and soakaway is typically £900 to £1,500 on top, and I'll tell you if you need it
How I do it
  1. Dig out

Old surface and base out to 250mm below finished level, spoil away by grab. Utility scan first, especially near the meter boxes.

  2. Base

Geotextile membrane, then 150mm of MOT Type 1 in two layers, each compacted with a plate. This is where the money goes and where it should.

  3. Edges and drainage

Kerbs or edging blocks bedded on concrete and haunched both sides. Channel drain at the garage or house threshold, piped to a soakaway.

  4. Lay, cut, compact

50mm sharp sand screeded to falls, blocks laid in herringbone (strongest under cars), cut with a bench saw not a grinder where it shows, kiln-dried sand vibrated into the joints.

Questions I get asked
How much is a block paving driveway in Doncaster?

From £75 per m² for a full dig-out and rebuild with standard blocks. A typical two-car drive of 50m² lands between £4,800 and £6,000 depending on what's coming out and the drainage. The Armthorpe driveway on this site was 86m² for £8,900 including a soakaway.

How long does it take?

Four to six days for most drives, one person. I don't leave you with a half-dug front garden while I'm on someone else's job.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

Not if it's permeable or drains to your own garden. If it drains to the road and it's over 5m², technically yes. I build every drive to meet the rule so the question doesn't come up.

Will you just re-lay my existing blocks?

If the base is sound, yes, and it's much cheaper. If the base is the reason it's sunk, re-laying on it is a waste of your money and I'll say so.

Who's doing the work

One person accountable, start to finish.

I'm Jack. I price it, I'm on the tools for it, and it's my name on it. Twelve years on site, a first-class degree in construction management, SMSTS and First Aid, and I operate the excavator myself. Where a job wants more hands I bring in people I've worked with for years and I run them. I cover Doncaster and everywhere within about half an hour of it: Bessacarr, Bawtry, Tickhill, Armthorpe, Thorne, Sprotbrough, Mexborough and over into Rotherham. More about me.
