A fence is only as good as what's in the ground. Most of the leaning, gappy fencing you see around Doncaster was put up on spiked metal posts driven into whatever was underneath, and it moves the first winter the ground's wet. Mine go in on concreted-in posts, set to a line and a level, deep enough to actually hold.
I put up traditional closeboard fencing, the horizontal-slat Venetian style that's everywhere in new gardens now, and gates to match either. And I do repairs: a panel that's blown over, a post that's rotted at the base, a gate that's dropped on its hinges. Half the fencing jobs I do are fixing someone else's spiked posts one at a time as they go, which costs more in the end than doing the run properly once.
Because I operate the excavator myself, a long run of post holes in clay or through an old base is quick for me where it's a full day of hand-digging for most fencers. That's reflected in the price, which I give on request once I've seen the run, the ground and what's coming down first.

What moves the price:
- Length of run and ground conditions: clay and old hardcore are slower to dig than open soil
- Style: closeboard is the simple option, Venetian slat and anything bespoke costs more in materials and time
- Height: over 1.8m on a boundary can need neighbour agreement or planning; I'll flag it
- Gates: a single pedestrian gate is quick, a wide double vehicle gate with posts sized to carry it is a bigger job
Look and mark out
Line, height and style agreed, boundary checked against yours and next door's if there's any doubt.
Take down and dig
Old fencing and posts out. Post holes dug by hand or with the excavator on longer runs, to a depth that suits the height and the ground.
Set and build
Posts set in concrete, plumbed and lined. Panels or closeboard boards and arris rails fixed, gates hung square with proper hinges and a latch that doesn't need slamming.
Finish
Gravel boards or a concrete kerb at the base so timber isn't sitting in wet soil, caps and finials fitted, everything left square.

How much does fencing cost in Doncaster?
I price it on request once I've seen the run and the ground, because concreted-in posts on clay cost more in labour than the same run on open soil, and closeboard against Venetian slat is a different materials bill. Do you concrete the posts in?
Always, for anything I'm putting up new. Spiked posts are quicker and cheaper on the day and they're why so much fencing round here is leaning within a few years.
Can you just fix a broken panel or post rather than the whole fence?
Yes, and it's most of what I get asked for. I'll tell you honestly if the rest of the run's about to go the same way, but I'm not going to talk you into replacing a fence that doesn't need it.
Do I need permission for a new fence?
Not usually, up to 1m facing a road or 2m elsewhere. Above that, or on a boundary where there's a dispute, I'll say so before I start.
