I tile as part of most of my bathrooms and kitchens, and I tile on its own: a kitchen floor, a splashback, a hallway in patterned porcelain, a bathroom where the suite's fine but the tiles aren't.
Splashbacks are one of the most common small jobs I get asked for: behind a hob, the full run behind a worktop, or a feature strip in a bathroom. It's a day's work in most kitchens, and it's the easiest way to lift a kitchen that isn't due a full refit.
The fashion now is big: 1200×600 and bigger on walls and floors. Big tiles show every flaw in the wall or floor behind them and they can't be laid on a bed of dot-and-dab adhesive like a 150×150 could. I flatten the substrate first, use a levelling-clip system so there are no lips between tiles, back-butter large formats, and lay floor tiles on a decoupling mat so the floor moving underneath doesn't crack the grout. It's slower. It's also why the tiles are still down in ten years.
The porcelain I lay outside and the porcelain I lay inside are the same material, and the same rule applies: it has to be primed and fully bedded or it doesn't stick.

What moves the price:
- Tile format: 600×600 is the £38 base; 1200×600 and bigger is nearer £50/m²; mosaics and small metros are slow and priced the same
- What's under it: a flat plastered wall is quick; a wall that needs boarding or a floor that needs levelling is extra
- Pattern: herringbone and diagonal layouts waste tile and take twice the cuts
- Tanking for showers and wet rooms, £250 to £500 depending on the area
Substrate
Walls flattened with bonding or boarded with cement board; floors levelled with a self-levelling compound over a primer, decoupling matting on timber floors.
Set out
Dry-laid from the centre so cuts are equal and land where they don't show. I'll show you before I mix adhesive.
Fix
Flexible adhesive with a notched trowel matched to the tile size, back-buttered on anything over 600mm, levelling clips on large formats.
Grout and seal
Grout the day after, cleaned off in three passes, silicone at every internal corner and junction, sealer on natural stone.

How much does a tiler charge in Doncaster?
From £38 per m² for laying, including adhesive and grout, on a prepared surface. Preparation (levelling, boarding, tanking) is priced separately and I'll tell you up front what yours needs. A typical bathroom of 25m² of walls and floor is £1,000 to £1,500 in labour.
Can you tile over existing tiles?
Sometimes, if they're solid and the extra thickness doesn't cause problems at doors and sockets. Usually I'd take them off; it's a couple of hours and you get a flat wall.
Do you supply the tiles?
Either. You can buy them yourself from Topps, CTD, Tile Giant or a local supplier and I'll tell you how many to order (add 10% for cuts, 15% for herringbone). Or I'll supply them at trade.
Do you do underfloor heating?
Yes, electric mat systems under tiles, or wet systems in a screed as part of a bigger floor job. The electrician connects it.
Can you just do a splashback?
Yes, on its own, no full retile needed. Send me the length and height of the run and a photo of what's there now and I'll price it. Most splashbacks are a single day.
